The Digital Literacies Conference is nearly upon us. During the conference and after we are going to be using a variety of social media. The idea is to generate discussion and ideas, both for the attendees and also for those unable to attend. Social Media allows us to record the event in a more interactive way. For those of you who are new to this, you might like to note the following:

What are we doing?

Twitter - because of the vast amount of information that goes flying about on Twitter, it would be easy to become overloaded and miss the information you are interested in. By using the # you can ‘tag’ your tweets and then use the same # to search for them. For this conference we will be using #sotondiglit – what this means is that throughout the day if you have something to say, a question to ask, a link to share, if you Tweet it and add the #sotondiglit, it will form part of the information trail for the conference. We can find what you have said and you can interact with others at the conference and see what they have said. We want you to ask questions, and share your feedback this way.

With Twitter you can share photos as well as links and information that you think would be useful for those attending the conference.

Flickr

We have a Digital Literacies group on Flickr. Flickr is another social media tool but this is for sharing photos. Again, using the tag #sotondiglit you can upload a photo and by adding the tag everyone can find the photos easily. The web address to look at the photos is available at http://www.flickr.com/groups/1885285@N24/pool/

Delicious

Social bookmarking allows us to curate content by tagging URLs. For the conference and for our Digital Literacies Special Interest Group activity we have a resource set up www.delicious.com/diglit. By making sure we are clear about the tags we use we are able to add useful links. If you want something to be included in this resource then use the tag #sotondiglit.

Storify

During the conference we want to share a record of the event. We have already mentioned that we want to use Twitter, Delicious and Flickr, Storify allows you to create a web page (essentially) with all of the information on the web (tagged appropriately) its dynamic so as things are tagged, they can be added. We would like you to have a go and create your own Storify of the event. After the event, send us your Storifys and you could win a cool prize! Use the #sotondiglit to share via Twitter.

Panel

We will have a question and answer panel, consisting of Professor Hugh Davis; PVC (Education) Debra Humphris; Dr Lisa Harris; PhD Student Nicole Beale and the Student Digital Literacies Champions. During the conference please use the #sotondiglit to tweet your questions or use the ‘real’ noticeboards at the conference.

Helpdesk

For those of you unfamiliar with most of the above, we will have a ‘helpdesk’. One of teh Studen Digital Literacies Champions will be on hand to help you with any aspect of the social media use.

Link for Live stream of the event:

http://www.southampton.ac.uk/isolutions/essentials/media/watch.php?vidid=5a953e9

Please note ‘Permission to record’

As we are planning on video recording some of tomorrows’ sessions, including live streaming them to people who couldn’t make it, and we will be making the recordings available later. To do this we need to get your permission, and will be asking you to sign a form at the registration desk. Unfortunately, we can’t just have a line at the top saying ‘I agree to being videoed at this conference’ and instead there is a page full of legal small print which basically amounts to the same thing; please take a look at it beforehand if you wish: http://www.edshare.soton.ac.uk/9083/ Thank you for your cooperation with this.

The first Digital Literacies project workshop for staff and students took place on Tuesday. The subject was ‘Online Identity’. Participants came along to a ‘discussion led workshop’ and took part in a series of discussions facilitated by Lisa Harris with Fiona Harvey and the Student Digital Literacies Champions.

The aim of the sessions is to engage in debate over a range of issues, using social media to encourage collaboration and information sharing. This event used Google docs to capture the discussions, Delicious to share resources and Twitter to encourage feedback. The participants were asked to bring any device that they could access the internet and were divided into three groups. One person from each group then accessed the Google Doc and was the scribe for their comments.

Not everyone had experienced this kind of workshop although none of them were strangers to the social media. They all knew that these tools exist, but a couple were not necessarily aware of how they can be used to get the keypoints from a discussion. It was the modern equivalent of using flipcharts, with out the hassle.

Further sessions are planned for the next couple of weeks, in addition to these, there will also be some ‘training’ (as opposed to discussions) workshops covering how to use social media for group interaction. If you are interested in these, please get in touch.

The resources from this workshop, and all subsequent workshops (links) are available via Delicious

We are all very excited about the conference and wanted to offer you the opportunity of getting involved.

1. We have created slots for very quick presentations for anyone (staff or students) to tell us about a tool or give us a tip about how you have been using one of the many applications available today. This can be anything at all as long as you have found it useful. We have some guidelines to give you an idea of what we are looking for and if you have any questions then please get in touch.

2. Twitter users, we have a Twitter # for the event. Please use this before, during and after the event #sotondiglit

3. We wanted to use social media as much as possible to enhance your expereince and to get across effective use of technology for an event like this. To that end we have a competition for the conference. We want you to take photos, record as much as possible and then create your own Storify. We also have a Flickr account setup to allow you to post your photos. All the links mentioned on the day will be recorded and added to our social bookmarking tool of choice, Delicious.

4. For those of you who are not yet involved in the use of Social Media or haven’t yet had a ‘go’ (whioch is why you are coming along in the first place!) help is at hand. We have arranged for the Student Digital Champions to be available on the day and we have a ‘Helpdesk’. There will be a board in place for you to leave ‘real’ as opposed to ‘virtual comments’.

We look forward to meeting you all in a few weeks time.

Best wishes

Fiona, Lisa and the Student Digital Literacies Champions

The result being that those who didn’t use it felt excluded. Interestingly, the Digital Literacies Conference have already decided that we will have a mechanism for feedback and comments for those who don’t have a Twitter account (or those who don’t want to).

Alex also mentioned the use of Mendeley. I have already set up a Mendeley account and will be posting about how we can use it soon.

I’m looking forward to the next presentation of the project.

I also heard from Cristina Costa re one of the ‘unkeynotes’ – they have great things planned and it looks like its going to be really useful.

Top facts: Did you know that Led Zeppelin played at the Garden Court venue in 1971? March 11th to be exact and the ticket price was 60p!

In other news, Lisa and I met to talk about using social media during the event. We would like the delegates to bring devices with them to record the event, we want tweets (using #sotondiglit), pictures and videos. SUSUtv have said that they will also be there to record the delegates and get some feedback. We will also be asking for presenters to and

I’l post more about how we intend to use social media later. If you have any questions about the conference then please get in touch with me.

The Online Identity workshop planned for 22nd May at 3pm (you can register below) is a chance for students and staff to review how they appear on line and take an active role in making deliberate changes on the way that they create a representation of themselves online. Are you aware that everything you do online can be found? If you post a review on Amazon your review can be found. What you say and how you appear online needs to be consistent and needs to reflect you in the best possible light. The workshop will highlight examples were profiles are not managed and there will be discussions about how your can enhance your profile and sell yourself effectively to potential employers.

There are still some places left for the workshop – come along and see how you can get the most for your own online identity. The Student Digital Literacy Champions will be running the workshop with Fiona Harvey and Lisa Harris.

The Digital Literacies Student Champions are going to be in London helping out with the Piano Hawk event organised by the USRG Digital Economy. Marina and Panos will be supporting the event. Further information about the initiative can be found here.

‘HAWK is a technology that can be utilised to understand more about how the hands move to complete functional tasks. It can accurately measure, to less than a degree, all the dynamic joint information of the human hand. HAWK is a unique set of algorithms that can receive three-dimensional coordinates of a number of fixed points on the wrist, hand fingers and thumb, from, for example, a motion capture system. It analyses the composite movements integral to hand function and is the first technique to accurately measure all these dynamic movements.’ (from the DE site)

There are YouTube videos on the DE USRG site which explain more about it. The event was run very successfully last year and the videos are information from that.

For a while now members of the Digital Literacies SIG (DLSIG) have been sharing information about various aspects of digital literacies, either via email or by posting onto the DLSIG. Many of us have also been using Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest and Delicious to save and share links. Over time this has become a valuable resource but it’s not very organised or easily searchable. At our planning meeting yesterday, we agreed that we would use Delicious to gather resources for a group and so now we have a Delicious Diglit account. What we will now do is share the account and have a set of common tags to ensure that as we gather we will also be able to retrieve them and use them appropriately.

I have mentioned a few tools here that may be of general interest. Below I’ve listed them with a little bit of detail. If you are interested in learning about how to use these tools or just have a chat about using tools like these then get in touch.

Delicious is a social bookmarking service. Essentially it allows links to be tagged & shared. They are then searchable. You can also search tags and find links that have been added from anyone – not just people you know.

Pinterest is a way of sharing using links only it’s visual. You can create boards to which you ‘pin’ images which are links and you can create different boards for different topics.

Twitter – a lot has been written about Twitter. Otherwise known as microblogging, essentially you can post information but with a restriction of 140 characters or less. You gather information through following people and they can follow you. Its easy to become overloaded trying to read everything and without careful management you can find it distracting BUT the Twittersphere can be hugely valuable and shouldn’t be dismissed.

Tumblr – this is microblogging and social networking combined. Following other ‘tumblrs’ means you can source information. This is a video that explains how it works.
